Is Amazon Grocery Worth It? Same-Day vs Whole Foods vs Amazon Fresh Fees Compared (2026)

For most US Prime members, Amazon's Same-Day grocery delivery is worth it. It's free on orders over $25, $2.99 below that, and it now includes fresh produce, meat, dairy and frozen food in more than 2,300 US cities and towns. The paid $9.99/month grocery delivery subscription only makes sense if you regularly order from Whole Foods Market or Amazon Fresh, where each delivery otherwise costs up to $9.95.

The hard part is understanding what "Amazon Grocery" actually means in 2026. Amazon now has five ways to get groceries delivered, each with its own fees. This guide puts them side by side, using Amazon's own published prices.

What is Amazon Grocery?

The name is used in two ways, which is why people are confused:

  1. A private-label brand. On October 1, 2025, Amazon launched "Amazon Grocery" as a store brand that replaced its older Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly labels, according to Grocery Dive. Amazon says Amazon Grocery and Amazon Saver together now include more than 1,200 products, most under $5.
  2. Groceries in Amazon's regular Same-Day Delivery. In its November 2026 explainer, Amazon uses "Amazon Grocery" for fresh groceries, pantry staples and household essentials sold through Same-Day Delivery. Amazon says this reaches more than 2,300 US cities and towns and has added over 6,000 items in the last six months.

Amazon Fresh still exists as an online grocery service. In January 2026, Amazon's grocery chief, Jason Buechel, announced that the physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores would close, with some locations converted to Whole Foods Market. The memo said the Fresh brand would continue online, according to CNBC's report.

How much does Amazon grocery delivery cost in 2026?

Amazon's own "5 ways to get fresh groceries delivered" page lists these fees (US):

Option Prime member Not a Prime member Speed
Same-Day Delivery (groceries in Amazon's regular store) Free over $25 in most areas; $2.99 under $25 $12.99 on all orders Same day
Whole Foods Market $9.95 per delivery $13.95 per delivery 2-hour windows
Amazon Fresh Free over $100; $6.95 for $50–$100; $9.95 under $50 $4.95–$13.95 depending on order size Scheduled windows
Amazon Now $3.99 (+$1.99 if under $15) $13.99 (+$3.99 if under $15) 30 minutes or less, select cities
Local grocers (e.g. Weis Markets, Winn-Dixie) Varies by partner Varies 2-hour windows

Grocery delivery subscription: $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Amazon says it covers unlimited deliveries on orders over $25 in most areas for Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh and participating local grocers. Qualifying government-assistance recipients and income-verified Prime Access customers can pay $4.99/month.

Prime itself: $14.99/month or $139/year. Prime for Young Adults is $7.49/month or $69/year, and Prime Access is $6.99/month, according to the same Amazon page.

Prices can vary by location and Amazon can change them, so check the fee shown at checkout.

Is the $9.99 Amazon grocery subscription worth it?

This is where people overspend. The break-even maths, using Amazon's listed prices (our calculation):

How you shop Without subscription (Prime) With subscription Verdict
Only Same-Day Delivery orders over $25 $0 $9.99/month Not worth it. Same-Day is already free for Prime over $25
1 Whole Foods delivery per month $9.95 $9.99 Break-even, so skip it
2 Whole Foods deliveries per month $19.90 $9.99 Worth it (saves ~$9.91)
4 Whole Foods deliveries per month $39.80 $9.99 Worth it (saves ~$29.81)
2 Amazon Fresh orders of $50–$100 per month $13.90 $9.99 Small saving (~$3.91)
Amazon Fresh orders always over $100 $0 $9.99 Not worth it

If you pay annually ($99.99), the monthly equivalent is about $8.33, so the break-even comes slightly sooner.

What's in Amazon's Thanksgiving grocery deals?

Amazon is using the holiday to push grocery delivery. Its November explainer lists:

  • A $25 Thanksgiving meal with an 8-lb Butterball frozen turkey, available through November 26 while supplies last (full details in our Amazon $25 Thanksgiving meal guide).
  • Frozen turkey at $0.79/lb from November 1 to 26, and fresh turkey at $0.99/lb from November 14 to 26.
  • 40% off charcuterie (November 2–14) and 40% off premade sides (November 15–26).

If you're also shopping gifts before Black Friday, the extended holiday return window is worth knowing. For groceries, Amazon points to its Freshness Guarantee on eligible perishable items rather than standard returns.

How do I order Amazon groceries for same-day delivery?

  1. Open the Amazon app or Amazon.com and search for a grocery item. Items eligible for Same-Day Delivery show the delivery estimate on the product page.
  2. Add groceries alongside regular Amazon items. Same-Day lets you combine them in one order.
  3. As a Prime member, keep the order over $25 to avoid the $2.99 fee.
  4. For Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh, choose that storefront and a delivery window at checkout.
  5. If you order Whole Foods or Fresh more than once a month, compare the $9.99 subscription against the per-delivery fees shown at checkout.
  6. Use Subscribe & Save for staples you buy regularly. Amazon says it offers up to 15% off.

Who saves the most?

Amazon says customers saved an average of over $230 last year on groceries, household essentials and other products through Subscribe & Save, coupons and deals. That's Amazon's own figure, not an independent one. It also says Prime members tripled their monthly free Same-Day fresh grocery orders over the past year. Amazon Access gives qualifying government-assistance recipients and income-verified customers 15% to 20% off select groceries and essentials.

Editor's take

Editor's take: Amazon's grocery offer looks simpler than it did a year ago, but the pricing is not. Since August 2025, when Amazon added produce, dairy, meat and frozen food to ordinary Same-Day Delivery, fresh food is no longer limited to Fresh or Whole Foods with their own fees. It's free over $25 for Prime. For a typical Prime household that changes the maths: the $9.99 subscription is no longer an automatic add-on. Get it only if Whole Foods delivery is a habit. Non-Prime shoppers should look hard at the $12.99 Same-Day fee. Two orders a month cost more than a month of Prime. We haven't tested delivery quality ourselves. This analysis is based on Amazon's published prices.
