Amazon Holiday Return Policy 2026: Buy Nov 1–Dec 31, Return Until Jan 31, 2027

Amazon's 2026 holiday return window started today. If you buy something eligible on Amazon.com between November 1 and December 31, 2026, you can return it until January 31, 2027. Apple-brand products are the exception: they must be back by January 15, 2027. For the first time, Amazon also told sellers this extended window "will apply every year."

Below is what changed, which purchases qualify, what doesn't, and a date-by-date table showing how many days you actually get.

What is Amazon's holiday return policy for 2026?

Amazon announced the 2026 terms to sellers in a Seller Central news post titled "Extended return window for items bought in November and December 2026." PPC Land dates that post to October 16, 2026. The key lines:

  • Items purchased by customers between November 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 31, 2027.
  • Apple brand products can be returned until January 15, 2027.
  • It applies to all items sold on Amazon.com, whether shipped by Amazon (FBA) or by the seller (FBM).
  • "No action is required from you, and existing return and refund conditions remain unchanged."
  • The policy "will apply every year."

The terms match last year's. Amazon's own 2025 explainer said most items bought from November 1 to December 31, 2025 could be returned until January 31, 2026, with Apple products due back by January 15, 2026.

One caveat: when we checked on November 1, Amazon's customer-facing Return Policy help page still showed only the standard windows. The 2026 extension comes from the seller announcement. In past years Amazon has published a customer-facing explainer once the season started.

How many days do I get to return a holiday purchase?

This is the part most guides skip. The extension is generous early in the season and shrinks to roughly the normal 30 days by late December. Using the dates Amazon published:

You buy on (2026) Return by Approx. days to return Apple-brand products
Nov 1 Jan 31, 2027 ~91 days Jan 15 (~75 days)
Nov 27 (Black Friday) Jan 31, 2027 ~65 days Jan 15 (~49 days)
Nov 30 (Cyber Monday) Jan 31, 2027 ~62 days Jan 15 (~46 days)
Dec 15 Jan 31, 2027 ~47 days Jan 15 (~31 days)
Dec 24 Jan 31, 2027 ~38 days Jan 15 (~22 days)
Dec 31 Jan 31, 2027 ~31 days Jan 15 (~15 days)
Jan 2, 2027 Normal rules (usually 30 days from delivery) — 15 days from delivery

Day counts are our arithmetic from purchase date to deadline. They are estimates, because Amazon's standard policy counts from delivery, while the holiday post refers to the purchase date. If an order placed on December 31 arrives in January, check the "return by" date in Your Orders. That date is what Amazon enforces.

Takeaway: buying on Black Friday gives you roughly two months to change your mind. A last-minute December 31 order gives you about the same as any other time of year.

Does the Amazon holiday return extension apply to everything?

No. The extension stretches the deadline but keeps the normal eligibility rules. Amazon's Return Policy page still applies. In brief:

Items that are normally not returnable stay non-returnable, including perishables, products that may pose health and safety risks if returned, customized products, Amazon Pharmacy and pet medication products, certain digital products, automobiles, and anything marked "Final Sale" (Amazon names trading card games and Amazon Haul items costing $3 or less).

Special windows in the standard policy:

Category (Amazon.com) Standard window
Most items 30 days from delivery
Unread Kindle books bought by accident, some digital textbooks 7 days
Apple and Boost Infinite products (new) 15 days
Amazon Haul items over $3 15 days
Select Amazon Renewed (Acceptable/Good/Excellent), most nonperishable baby products, mattresses (excl. crib) 90 days
Wedding Registry gifts bought by guests 180 days
Amazon Renewed Premium, Baby Registry gifts bought by guests 365 days

If an item's normal window already runs past January 31 (for example a 90-day mattress return or a 365-day Renewed Premium item), the holiday extension doesn't shorten it. Amazon says existing conditions "remain unchanged."

Do Prime Big Deal Days or early October purchases count?

No. The window covers purchases from November 1. Anything you bought during October's Prime Big Deal Days or other October sales follows the normal 30-day-from-delivery rule. Since Amazon moved the start date to November 1 in 2023, autumn Prime event orders have been left out (per Value Added Resource).

If you're waiting for the official Black Friday 2026 sale dates, every Black Friday and Cyber Monday order falls inside the extended window.

Are there return fees I should know about?

Returns are "generally free," according to Amazon's help page, but it lists fees that still apply during the holidays:

  • Return shipping fee: possible if you pick a drop-off option that isn't free, return a heavy or bulky item, or have "an unusually high return rate."
  • Late fee: if you miss the "return by" date, 20% of the item price for the first 30 days, then 100%. Miss January 31 and you could be charged.
  • Damage fee: for items returned damaged, missing parts, or not in their original condition.

Refund timing, per the same page, once Amazon issues the refund: gift card balance 2–3 hours; credit card 3–5 business days; debit card or checking account up to 10 business days; prepaid credit cards up to 30 days.

How do I return an Amazon gift or holiday purchase?

  1. Go to Your Orders on Amazon.com or in the app. Select the item and choose Return or replace items.
  2. Pick a reason and a refund method.
  3. Choose a drop-off option. Amazon's 2025 holiday explainer says it offers free returns at over 10,000 locations, usually within about 5 miles of your address. Many need no box, tape or label, just a QR code.
  4. At Whole Foods Market, Amazon's guide says you show the QR code at the Pickup & Return desk. Many stores also have a self-service kiosk.
  5. Returning a gift you received? You don't need the giver's account. Amazon says to use the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt on its Returns page.

Screenshot the QR code before you leave home. Amazon's Whole Foods guide recommends it.

What about Amazon UK, Germany and other countries?

The 2026 seller announcement covers Amazon.com (US) only. When we checked, we found no 2026 announcement for Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de or other stores. For context, Amazon UK's Christmas page for 2025 said "most items purchased between 1 November and 31 December can now be returned until 31 January 2026." A similar 2026 window would follow that pattern, but treat it as unconfirmed until Amazon publishes it. Check your local store's returns page, or the "return by" date on each order.

How has Amazon's holiday return window changed over the years?

What are shoppers and sellers saying?

We found no large consumer Reddit threads about the 2026 window yet, so there are no shopper quotes to share. Replies under Amazon's Seller Central post show what sellers think:

  • One seller joked about anticipating "3 month rentals."
  • Another asked Amazon to "at least make 1/31 a hard date," which reflects a common complaint that late returns still trickle in.
  • A third asked whether the policy covers Amazon Renewed items. No answer was visible when we checked.

Editor's take

For shoppers this is good news, and the "every year" commitment makes it more useful because you can plan around it. Two things are easy to miss. First, the extra time is front-loaded: November purchases get up to three months, while late-December orders get about the normal 30 days. Second, Apple products are due back two weeks earlier, on January 15. If you're buying an iPhone, iPad or AirPods as a gift and aren't sure it's right, make that call early. Above all, trust the "return by" date in Your Orders over any article, including this one.
