Blade Runner 2099 Release Date, Time, Cast and How to Watch on Prime Video

Blade Runner 2099 arrives on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, and Prime Video is releasing all eight episodes at once — no weekly wait. It's a Prime Video exclusive in more than 240 countries and territories, so if you already pay for Amazon Prime (or a standalone Prime Video plan) you can binge the whole limited series on day one at no extra cost.

Below: the confirmed release details, what we know (and don't) about the release time, the full cast, how it connects to the two films, what it costs to watch in 4K, and what critics said about the trailers. Every fact is sourced at the bottom.

When does Blade Runner 2099 come out?

Amazon's own news page for the show says all eight episodes premiere November 25, 2026, "exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories." The page was first published on July 24, 2026 — the day the teaser debuted at San Diego Comic-Con — and updated on October 12, 2026, after the full trailer was shown at New York Comic Con on October 10.

November 25 is the day before US Thanksgiving, which makes the series an obvious long-weekend binge for American viewers. It is also the same day The Rings of Power Season 3 drops its final two episodes, so Prime Video has stacked two of its biggest genre titles on one date. (Our Rings of Power Season 3 release schedule has that show's full calendar.)

What time does Blade Runner 2099 come out on Prime Video?

Amazon has not published a release time. Neither the official news page nor the Prime Video listing we checked gives an hour, and Collider's release-date report also gives no time. If Amazon releases it at a single global moment, as it does for some originals, the drop could fall on the evening of November 24 in parts of the Americas — but that is our inference, not a confirmed schedule for this show.

The practical move: add the show to your Watchlist on Prime Video now, and check the title page on the evening of November 24 (Americas) or the morning of November 25 (Europe/Asia). We'll update this article if Amazon posts a specific time. In the US, you can also ask Amazon's shopping assistant to remind you — Amazon's own example of an "Update Me When" alert is a new season dropping on Prime Video (more on what the assistant can now do in our Alexa for Shopping 100+ new actions guide).

What is Blade Runner 2099 about?

Amazon's official synopsis: "Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their city."

The shorter Prime Video listing describes Cora as "a fugitive turned Blade Runner" who partners with Olwen "to hunt a runaway in a reborn Los Angeles." Wikipedia's summary of the premise, drawing on press coverage, describes a 2099 Los Angeles where Replicants hold power after an uprising and humans are second-class citizens — a flip of the power structure in the 1982 film.

Do you need to watch the movies first? Nothing official says so, and a limited series built around two new characters is presumably designed to work on its own. That said, the 50-year jump only means something if you know where Blade Runner 2049 left the world. If you have time for one film, make it 2049; if you have time for two, watch them in release order (1982, then 2017). Availability of the films on Prime Video varies by country — the Blade Runner 2099 title page does link to a "Blade Runner collection," so check what's included where you live.

Who is in the Blade Runner 2099 cast?

Amazon lists four series regulars and eight recurring guest stars. Character names are only public for the two leads.

Actor Role Billing (per Amazon)
Michelle Yeoh Olwen, a Replicant near the end of her life Series regular
Hunter Schafer Cora, a fugitive who becomes a Blade Runner Series regular
Dimitri Abold Not yet announced Series regular
Lewis Gribben Not yet announced Series regular

Daniel Rigby Not yet announced Recurring guest
Johnny Harris Not yet announced Recurring guest
Amy Lennox Not yet announced Recurring guest
Sheila Atim Not yet announced Recurring guest
Matthew Needham Not yet announced Recurring guest

Maurizio Lombardi Not yet announced Recurring guest

Behind the camera, Silka Luisa is creator and showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken directs the first two episodes and is an executive producer. Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner, is an executive producer alongside Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson (Alcon), Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green (co-writer of 2049), Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra and Isa Dick Hackett, according to Amazon. Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling are not in Amazon's cast list.

Why did Blade Runner 2099 take so long?

The show has been in development for roughly five years. This timeline is compiled from Wikipedia's production history, which cites the trade press (Deadline, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, BBC News) — we have not independently re-verified each date.

Date Milestone
Nov 2021 Ridley Scott says a pilot and series bible have been written
Feb 2022 Title Blade Runner 2099 revealed; Silka Luisa attached as showrunner
Sep 2022 Amazon orders it as a limited series
May 2023 Planned filming in Belfast postponed by the 2023 WGA strike
Oct 2023 Production leaves Northern Ireland (BBC News reported funding would be returned)
Feb 2024 Original pilot director Jeremy Podeswa exits; Jonathan van Tulleken takes episodes 1–2
Jun 2024 Filming begins in Prague (Barrandov Studios), with additional shooting in Barcelona
Dec 2024 Filming wraps
Jul 24, 2026 Teaser and November 25 date revealed at San Diego Comic-Con
Oct 10, 2026 Full trailer shown at New York Comic Con
Nov 25, 2026 All 8 episodes premiere on Prime Video

Almost two years between wrap and release is long even for an effects-heavy series, but Amazon hasn't publicly explained the gap, so we won't speculate about why.

How much does it cost to watch Blade Runner 2099?

The series is included with Prime Video. In the US, per Amazon:

Option (US) Price What you get for this show
Amazon Prime $14.99/month or $139/year All 8 episodes, HD, HDR10/HDR10+, Dolby Vision, with ads
Prime for Young Adults / Prime Access 50% off for eligible members Same Prime Video benefit
Prime Video Ultra add-on $4.99/month (or $45.99/year for annual Prime members) No ads, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, 5 streams, 100 downloads
Free trial 30 days, if eligible Enough to binge the series

The detail most people miss: since Amazon launched Prime Video Ultra in the US earlier this year, 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos are Ultra-only. Standard Prime members still get HD, HDR10/HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. For a show sold on its visuals, that's the main reason some viewers will consider the add-on. Prime Video Ultra is US-only for now; outside the US, plans and prices differ, so check Prime Video in your country.

Should you pay for Prime Video Ultra just for this? A quick decision guide

Your situation Our suggestion
You watch on a phone, laptop or 1080p TV Stick with standard Prime — 4K won't make a visible difference
You have a 4K HDR TV and ads bother you Ultra for one month ($4.99) covers the binge; cancel after
You only care about HDR Standard Prime already includes Dolby Vision and HDR10+
You also plan to binge Rings of Power S3 the same week One month of Ultra covers both
You're outside the US Ultra isn't offered; check your local Prime Video plans

What are critics and fans saying about the trailers?

There are no reviews yet — the series isn't out — so the only reactions so far are to the July teaser and October trailer.

  • Engadget's Lawrence Bonk wrote that the teaser "is absolutely soaked in cyberpunk vibes and the effects look pretty stunning," while noting "there isn't much by way of plot specifics."
  • /Film's Jeremy Mathai was more guarded: "It could've been worse, I suppose. No, seriously, we mean that as a compliment," ending with "All that's left is proving us skeptics wrong."

We looked for fan discussion on Reddit (r/bladerunner) but couldn't retrieve threads during this check, so we're not quoting any posts. Based on the questions people are actually searching for, readers mostly want to know: the exact release time, whether Harrison Ford or Ryan Gosling appear, whether you need to rewatch the films, and whether there will be a season 2 (Amazon calls it a limited series, which usually signals a self-contained story).

Editor's take

Two things stand out. First, the all-at-once release: Amazon has been splitting its tentpoles into batches (Rings of Power S3 is spread over three weeks), so dropping Blade Runner 2099 whole on Thanksgiving eve is a deliberate bet on a binge weekend. Second, this is the first big Prime Video original to launch since 4K moved behind Prime Video Ultra in the US. A visually driven sci-fi show is exactly the title that will test how many people pay $4.99 for the sharper picture. If you have a good 4K TV, one month of Ultra over the holiday week is a reasonable, cancellable experiment; otherwise, standard Prime gives you everything except the extra resolution and ad removal.
