Kindle Colorsoft 2026 vs 2025: What Changed and Should You Upgrade?

The Kindle Colorsoft 2026 is a redesign rather than a revolution. It has a reworked colour display that Amazon says improves brightness, contrast and uniformity, a thinner and lighter flush-front body, and a higher price of $289.99 for the 16GB model. If you already own a 2024 or 2025 Colorsoft and you're happy with it, wait. If you're coming from a black-and-white Kindle and read comics or illustrated books, the 2026 model is the one to get.

The new Colorsoft is available to pre-order now and arrives on 28 October 2026 in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and other markets. Here's what actually changed.

Kindle Colorsoft 2026 vs 2025: what changed?

A quick note on naming first. The first Colorsoft Signature Edition launched in 2024. In 2025, Amazon added a cheaper 16GB Colorsoft and a Colorsoft Kids. When people say "2025 Colorsoft", they usually mean that 16GB model. The 2026 lineup replaces both.

Sources: Amazon's 2026 Kindle announcement, Amazon's Colorsoft expansion page (updated 1 Sept 2026), and eReadersForum's spec roundup. Where a cell says n/a, we couldn't verify the older spec from an official source, so we've left it out rather than guess.

The headline changes are:

  1. The display stack. Amazon lists nitride LEDs in the light guide, an oxide backplane with custom waveforms, micro-deflectors and an ultra-thin optical coating. In plain English, Amazon is going after the "muted, slightly dark" look that colour E Ink has always had.
  2. A flush, edge-to-edge front. The body colour wraps around the front edge.
  3. A thinner, lighter design. The standard model weighs 204g.
  4. Signature Edition upgrades. Aluminium, auto-adjusting light, double-tap page turns, and charging on a pogo-pin dock.

What didn't change is resolution. Colour is still 150 PPI and black-and-white is still 300 PPI. If you hoped for sharper colour images, this isn't that upgrade.

Kindle Colorsoft 2026 price: did it really go up?

Yes and no. Amazon's own Colorsoft page, updated 1 September 2026, listed the 16GB model at $249.99, and the new one is $289.99. That's the "$40 more" that Digital Trends and others reported.

But Bloomberg reported the 2026 Kindles keep the same prices as their direct predecessors, after Amazon raised Kindle prices in August because of memory costs. Good e-Reader also described an earlier jump to $289. So it depends on when you compare. Against what most people paid for a 2025 Colorsoft, the new one costs more. Against the late-summer price, it doesn't.

The Signature Edition went from $279.99 (2024 model) to $319.99 (2026).

Kindle Colorsoft 2026 review: what do reviewers say?

We haven't used the 2026 Colorsoft ourselves, so here's what published reviews say.

  • Tom's Guide reviewed the 2026 model and titled its verdict "still the King of e-readers," calling the 7-inch display bright, sharp and detailed.
  • We found no published side-by-side brightness measurement of the 2026 panel against the 2024/2025 panel. Until someone measures it, treat "brighter" as Amazon's claim rather than a proven fact.
  • eReadersForum makes the same point: whether the new display fixes colour E Ink's darker, muted look "will be answered by independent reviews."

Kindle Colorsoft 2026 Reddit: what are readers saying?

We tried to pull threads from r/kindle and couldn't load them reliably at the time of writing, so we won't pretend to quote them. Here's what we did find from real readers:

  • On a Slickdeals thread about the 16GB Colorsoft deal in June 2026, commenters said the colour is worth it mainly for graphic novels and illustrated non-fiction, and described the colours as muted, closer to paperback printing than to a tablet.
  • A UK review syndicated across regional papers noted the Colorsoft costs almost £100 more than the Paperwhite there, which is hard to justify if you read mostly fiction.

These are the questions readers are asking about the 2026 model:

  • Is the new display noticeably brighter, or just slightly better?
  • Does the standard 2026 Colorsoft still have wireless charging? Amazon's 2026 materials mention dock charging for the Signature, and we couldn't confirm Qi wireless on either model.
  • Is the flush front more likely to scratch?

We'll update this article once measured reviews come in.

Should you upgrade? A simple decision guide

You own... Our advice
A Colorsoft Signature (2024) Wait. Same resolution and storage, and you already have auto light and premium charging. Upgrade only if the display reviews show a clear difference.
A 16GB Colorsoft (2025) Probably wait. You'd pay $289.99 for a better panel and lighter body. Worth it if the dim screen bothers you every day.
A black-and-white Paperwhite and you read comics, manga, cookbooks or kids' books Upgrade. Get the 2026 Colorsoft.
A Paperwhite and you read mostly novels Skip colour. A Paperwhite does the same job for less.
An old Kindle (pre-2021) Upgrade, but think about whether you need colour at all. Our Kindle buying guide compares all six 2026 models.
A Fire tablet you mainly read on A Colorsoft is easier on the eyes. See what's happening to Fire tablets.

In the editor's view, the Signature Edition is the better buy this year if you're buying new. For $30 more you get double the storage (useful for comics, which have large files), auto light and the aluminium body.

What nobody is telling you about the Kindle Colorsoft 2026

Colour resolution is the real limit, and it hasn't moved. At 150 PPI, colour comics look fine at arm's length, but fine print in colour panels is still soft. A brighter panel helps with the "dull" complaint, but not with sharpness.

Accessories add up. The new Kindle Click Bluetooth page-turner is $34.99, the Page-Turn Cover for the Signature is $79.99 and the charging dock is $59.99. A fully kitted Signature costs nearly $500.

Comics and manga readers should consider a tablet. If colour is the whole point, the new Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 shows comics in full colour with Kindle reading mode, though it's an LCD screen and not E Ink.
