Is the Amazon Fire Tablet Discontinued? What the Alexa Tablet Switch Means for Fire Owners
Amazon stopped making Fire tablets. What that means for updates, Fire Max 11 and Fire Kids owners, and whether to keep, buy or upgrade now.

Yes, in practice. Amazon has stopped making new Fire tablets and replaced them with the Android-based Amazon Alexa Tablet line, which launched on 14 October 2026. If you already own a Fire tablet, though, nothing breaks today: Amazon says existing Fire tablets keep working and stay supported, and reports say security updates continue for four years after the final units ship.
Below is exactly what Amazon has and hasn't said, what it means for Fire HD, Fire Max 11 and Fire Kids owners, and a simple plan for what to do next.
Is the Amazon Fire tablet discontinued?
Here's what's confirmed and where the confusion comes from.
- Production has ended. Amazon told CNBC it is no longer manufacturing Fire tablets, according to reports summarising that interview (Hoodline and others).
- Remaining stock is still on sale. Reports say Amazon will sell through its existing Fire inventory. That's why you're seeing deals like the Fire HD 10 (black) at $73, which Gizmodo spotted this week. Clearance prices change fast, so check before you buy.
- The replacement isn't "Fire 2". An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that the Alexa Tablets are "an all-new product line with new hardware and a new OS, rather than a rebrand of Fire Tablets."
Notice that Amazon's own launch post on aboutamazon.com doesn't mention Fire tablets at all. The word "discontinued" comes from press coverage, not from Amazon. In plain terms, though, no new Fire tablets are being made, so the line is finished.

Will my Fire tablet still get updates?
This is the question that matters most to owners. There are two pieces to it.
1. Amazon's standing policy. Amazon's help page on Fire tablet security updates promises guaranteed security updates "until at least four years after the device is last available for purchase" on its websites. After that, it says it will try to keep providing them where it can. Liliputing has noted for years that this counts from the last day a model was sold, not its launch date. That's more generous than it sounds.
2. What was said at the Alexa Tablet launch. Coverage of Amazon's comments says the Fire lineup will be supported for four years after its final shipment, and that current owners can keep using their tablets as they do now.
What this means for you, in the editor's reading:
| Your tablet | What to expect |
|---|---|
| A current model bought in 2025–2026 (Fire HD 8, HD 10, Max 11, Kids editions) | Security updates for years. The four-year clock hasn't even started while stock is still being sold. |
| An older model Amazon stopped selling years ago | Check Amazon's support page for your model. Some older generations are already past their guaranteed date. |
| Any Fire tablet | Don't expect big new features. Amazon's software effort is clearly moving to the Android-based Alexa Tablets. |
What we couldn't confirm: an exact end date for each current Fire model under the new announcement. Amazon's UK help page has listed a support-through date for its current tablet range in the past. Check the page for your country, because those dates can be updated.
Is the Amazon Fire Max 11 discontinued?
Yes. The Fire Max 11 is part of the Fire line that Amazon has stopped making. Its closest replacement is the Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 at $329.99, which has an 11-inch 2.5K 90Hz display, 8GB of RAM and Google Play. The Max 11 topped out at about $230, per CNBC, so the new model costs noticeably more.
If you own a Max 11, it keeps working, it keeps the Amazon Appstore, and it's covered by the same update policy above.
Is the Fire Kids tablet discontinued?
The Fire Kids tablets go with the rest of the Fire line. Amazon has replaced them with new Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, built on the Alexa Tablet hardware. According to Amazon, they come in two versions:
- Pre-K (ages 3+): a soft bumper case with designs from franchises like Paw Patrol and Barbie.
- Kids 6+: a slim hard case with a built-in kickstand.
Both bundle a year of Amazon Kids+. Amazon also announced a Kids+ feature called Storybuilder, which creates illustrated stories by voice, and a redesigned Parent Dashboard. Amazon's post doesn't give Kids Tablet prices. AFTVNews reports the Kids versions cost the same as the regular ad-supported tablets, even though they add the case and subscription.
Fire Kids owners should know that the Kids editions have always been covered by the same security-update policy as standard Fire tablets, Liliputing notes. What will happen to the Fire Kids worry-free guarantee on existing units hasn't been spelled out in the launch coverage we read. Keep your proof of purchase.
What should Fire tablet owners do now?
Here's a decision path in plain words.
- Is your Fire tablet working fine for what you use it for? Keep it. Nothing is being switched off.
- Has your model reached the end of its guaranteed update window? Check Amazon's help page for your country. If it has, stop using it for banking or shopping and treat it as a video and reading device only.
- Do you mainly want Google apps (YouTube, Gmail, Chrome)? That's the real reason to upgrade. Every Alexa Tablet has the full Play Store, with no sideloading needed.
- Do you just want a cheap tablet for a child or a kitchen? A clearance Fire may be the smartest buy of 2026. It will get security updates for years, and at clearance prices (Gizmodo spotted a Fire HD 10 at $73 this week) there's little money at risk.
- Want something better than Fire? The Alexa Tablet 8 or 11 are the natural next step.
One more tip: download your Appstore apps' data and photos to cloud storage now rather than later. Fire apps come from the Amazon Appstore, while Alexa Tablets use Google Play, so your purchased Appstore apps may not carry over. Amazon hasn't published a migration path in the materials we read.
What nobody is telling you about the Fire tablet switch
The bargain tablet is gone, and Amazon has said so. Coverage of the launch quotes Amazon devices chief Panos Panay saying the old lineup "wasn't giving customers what they were asking for." The cheapest new model is $229.99. For years, Fire was the tablet you bought for $50 on Prime Day. That market no longer has an Amazon product.
The reaction is split. Under AFTVNews' launch post, one commenter, Keith, said the new design is close to what he'd been wanting and he might buy one on sale. Another, Craig, argued Amazon can't charge premium prices because "They are NOT Apple or Samsung." AFTVNews editor Elias Saba wrote in the comments that Fire OS and the Amazon Appstore were "destined for death" anyway.
Your Alexa experience will differ by device. Alexa+ is built into the new tablets. If you're wondering whether the older Fire gets the full Alexa+ experience, our Alexa+ explainer covers where it's available.
We tried to gather Reddit reaction from r/amazonfire but couldn't load threads reliably at the time of writing. The questions owners are asking are the ones this article answers: will my tablet stop working (no), will it get updates (yes, for years), and will my apps move over (unclear).

Global note: US, UK and Europe
Amazon's Alexa Tablets shipped in the US, Canada and Mexico on 14 October and in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain from 19 October 2026. Fire clearance stock and support dates may differ by country, so check Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de and the other local stores for your region's prices and support pages.
