The Greatest on Prime Video: Release Date, Cast, Episodes and How to Watch the Muhammad Ali Series
The Greatest, Prime Video's Muhammad Ali series, drops all 8 episodes Nov 4, 2026. Jaalen Best cast, years covered (1960-64), reviews and how to watch.

The Greatest, Prime Video's scripted series about Muhammad Ali, premieres on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. All eight episodes arrive at once, exclusively on Prime Video, in more than 240 countries and territories. Jaalen Best plays the young Cassius Clay, who later becomes Muhammad Ali. Amazon calls it "the first authorized scripted series" about Ali's life, and his widow, Lonnie Ali, is an executive producer.
You don't buy it separately. It's included with Prime Video, so a regular Amazon Prime membership (or a Prime Video plan where Amazon sells one) is all you need. Below: when it drops, who's in it, which years of Ali's life it covers, what early reviews say, and whether it's worth a weekend.
When does The Greatest come out on Prime Video?
November 4, 2026, worldwide. Amazon's own article says it plainly: "The Greatest premieres on Prime Video on November 4 worldwide," and "All eight episodes of The Greatest will premiere on November 4, 2026."
This is a full-season drop, not a weekly release. It's a different approach from the other big Prime Video series this month. The Rings of Power Season 3 opens with four episodes on November 11 and then releases the rest in batches (our schedule guide).

What time does The Greatest release?
Amazon hasn't published an exact release hour on its news pages. Because it's a worldwide premiere, the episodes will appear at a different clock time depending on where you live. Our advice is the same as for other Prime Video premieres. Add the show to your Watchlist now, and on the evening of November 3 (US time) check the title page in the app, which usually shows a countdown or "New series Wednesday" label for your region. We won't guess an hour Amazon hasn't confirmed.
What is The Greatest about?
Amazon describes the series as an intimate look at Ali's life away from the famous wins and losses: "The world remembers an icon, but The Greatest is about a man, a husband, a father, a brother, and a son." It also says, "The heartbeat of the story is fueled by all the moments that took place outside of the spotlight."
What years of Muhammad Ali's life does it cover?
Amazon's page doesn't name a time span, but the early reviews do. TheWrap's review (Zaki Hasan, October 30, 2026) says the season starts with Clay's gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics and ends with his 1964 defeat of Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. That makes Season 1 an origin story about Cassius Clay becoming Muhammad Ali.
The same review notes what the season leaves out: Ali's refusal of the Vietnam draft, the loss of his boxing licence and his comeback. If you were hoping to see the Rumble in the Jungle or the Frazier fights, they aren't in this season. That's our inference from the 1960–1964 span the reviews describe.
The cast list points the same way. It includes Sonny Liston, Malcolm X, trainer Angelo Dundee and Ali's brother Rudy, all central figures in those early years.
Who is in The Greatest cast?
Amazon confirms the main cast below. The recurring roles come from the show's Wikipedia page and are marked as such.
| Actor | Role | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Jaalen Best | Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali | Amazon |
| Omari Hardwick | Cassius Clay Sr. (Ali's father) | Amazon |
| Dana Gourrier | Odessa "Bird" Clay (Ali's mother) | Amazon |
| Kai Parham | Rudy Clay (later Rahaman Ali) | Amazon / Wikipedia |
| Amin Joseph | Sonny Liston | Amazon |
| Michael Ealy | Malcolm X | Amazon |

| Reno Wilson | Drew Bundini Brown | Wikipedia (recurring) |
| Adrian Alvarado | Dr. Ferdie Pacheco | Wikipedia (recurring) |
| Erica Tazel | Geraldine Liston | Wikipedia (recurring) |

Best is the lead people will be talking about. He was previously seen in All American: Homecoming, and early coverage describes this as his first leading role.
Who made The Greatest?
- Creator, showrunner and executive producer: Ben Watkins (Blue Monday Productions). Wikipedia credits him with directing the first two episodes.
- Executive producer: Lonnie Ali, who also gave the production access to the Ali estate.
- Production partners (per Amazon): Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, Authentic Studios, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment and Grace: A Storytelling Company.
- Filming: according to Wikipedia, in Ontario, Canada (Cobourg, Hamilton and Toronto) during 2025.
Wikipedia says Prime Video ordered the series in July 2024.
How to watch The Greatest
- Get Prime Video access. The show is included with an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon lists US Prime at $14.99 a month or $139 a year, with a 30-day free trial for eligible new members. Prices differ by country, so check your local Amazon site. In markets where Amazon sells Prime Video on its own, that plan includes Amazon originals too.
- Open Prime Video on a smart TV, Fire TV, Roku, games console, phone, tablet or primevideo.com.
- Search "The Greatest" and add it to your Watchlist. There are a lot of titles with "Greatest" in the name, so look for the Muhammad Ali series with the Prime Video badge.
- On November 4, press play on Episode 1. All eight are there from day one.
About ads: in many countries Prime Video now shows limited ads by default, with an optional paid ad-free add-on. That's an account-level setting, not something specific to this show.
Is The Greatest worth watching? What critics are saying
The series hasn't premiered yet, so all we have are pre-release reviews. So far they're positive.
- TheWrap headlined its review "Prime Video's Muhammad Ali Series Is One Of the Year's Best TV Dramas." Critic Zaki Hasan opens with the line "There was never just one Muhammad Ali." He also asks whether an authorised production, made with the estate's cooperation, can fully deal with Ali's less flattering sides. He credits the series for not avoiding them.
- The TV Cave focuses on Clay's amateur years, the Rome gold and the racism of the 1960s South, and says, "I definitely recommend checking this one out."
What we haven't found: a Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic score. Those usually firm up after launch, and we'll add them if they look meaningful.
What fans are asking
We looked for Reddit and forum threads reacting to the October trailer and didn't find substantial discussion we could link to, so we're not quoting any fan posts. Going by Google's search suggestions, these are the questions people are asking most:
- "The Greatest Prime Video release date" (answered above: November 4)
- "The Greatest Prime Video cast" (table above)
- "The Greatest Muhammad Ali series trailer" (it's embedded in Amazon's article, linked in Sources)
- "Is it a series or a movie?" (it's an eight-episode series)
Editor's take
Two things make The Greatest stand out among this month's Prime Video premieres.
First, it's authorised. Lonnie Ali's involvement gives the show access no unofficial biopic could get. But as TheWrap points out, authorised life stories have an obvious pull toward the flattering version. Early reviews suggest Ben Watkins pushed back on that, which is the right instinct.
Second, the all-at-once release suits the story. A 1960–1964 arc that builds to the Liston fight is a natural binge with a clear payoff in the last episode. With The Rings of Power starting a week later and Madden streaming from November 18 (our Madden guide), Amazon is spreading its biggest November titles across the month. The Greatest gets the first weekend to itself.
If you only know Ali from the late-career fights, this is the part of the story most viewers have never seen dramatised in detail. That's the main reason to watch.
The Greatest viewing checklist
- Prime membership or Prime Video plan active (US Prime: $14.99/month or $139/year)
- Show added to Watchlist (search "The Greatest", check for the Ali key art)
- App updated on your TV / streaming stick
- Optional: ad-free add-on if you want an uninterrupted binge
- Block out about a weekend. Amazon hasn't published episode runtimes, so check the title page on launch day.
- Next up: Madden (Nov 18) and the rest of the November Prime Video lineup
