Claude Haiku 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock: Price, Speed, and How to Use It
Claude Haiku 5.5 hit Amazon Bedrock on 7 Oct 2026 at $0.10/$0.50 per 1M tokens. Real cost per 1,000 requests vs Haiku 4.5, model ID and boto3 code.

Short answer: Claude Haiku 5.5 went live on Amazon Bedrock on 7 October 2026, the same day Anthropic released it. On Bedrock's Global endpoint it costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. That's a tenth of Haiku 4.5's rate. AWS and Anthropic say it works out to "around 75% less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks." It is also the first Haiku with effort controls, and it has a 1M-token context window.
The headline says 75% cheaper, but the price list says 90% cheaper. That gap is the most useful thing to understand before you move a workload, so most of this guide is about it.

Claude Haiku 5.5 release date: when did it land on Bedrock?
- 7 October 2026: Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5. AWS published its What's New post and a launch blog the same day.
- 13 October 2026: It appeared in AWS's weekly roundup.
It is available in two places on AWS:
- Amazon Bedrock. You call it through
bedrock-runtimeand get Bedrock's controls: IAM, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Guardrails, Knowledge Bases and regional data residency. - Claude Platform on AWS. You get Anthropic's own API and console, with AWS handling billing and sign-in.
Bedrock offers cross-region inference profiles for the US, EU, AU, JP and Global geographies. AWS's blog also lists GovCloud (US) support.
Claude Haiku 5.5 price on Amazon Bedrock
These are standard on-demand rates in USD per million tokens. Classmethod pulled them from the AWS Price List API (source). Check the Bedrock pricing page for your own region before you budget.
| Item | Global profile | US / JP profile | Haiku 4.5 (Global) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input (prompt ≤100K tokens) | $0.10 | $0.11 | $1.00 |
| Output (prompt ≤100K tokens) | $0.50 | $0.55 | $5.00 |
| Input (prompt >100K tokens) | $0.50 | $0.55 | — |
| Output (prompt >100K tokens) | $2.50 | $2.75 | — |
| Cache write (5 min) | $0.125 | $0.1375 | $1.25 |
| Cache read | $0.01 | $0.011 | $0.10 |
| Context window | 1M tokens | 1M tokens | 200K tokens |
What the table shows:
- Geographic profiles cost about 10% more than Global. Use a US or EU profile only if you need data residency.
- The 100K line is a price cliff. Above it, input costs five times as much. Haiku 5.5 is still about half Haiku 4.5's price there, but the 90% saving is gone.
- Batch is roughly half price on Bedrock models generally. Overnight classification jobs should go there.
Why "75% cheaper" and not 90%?
The per-token price is 90% lower. Anthropic's claim is about the cost of finishing a task, and it says around 75% "for most tasks." Two things probably explain the difference. Both are our reading, not something AWS spells out:
- Effort controls. Haiku 5.5 supports effort levels, reported as low to max with medium as the default (computingforgeeks). More effort means more thinking, which means more output tokens. AWS's blog notes that the model can return a thinking block before the text.
- Long prompts. Any request over 100K tokens is billed at the higher tier.
Editor's take: Plan on 75% savings, and treat 90% as a bonus. Before switching a whole pipeline, run your real prompts at two effort levels and compare the output token counts on your bill.
Cost calculator: per 1M tokens and per 1,000 requests
We used two common request shapes. A "typical" request is a chatbot reply or ticket classifier: 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. A "long-doc" request is 150,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens. These are list prices only. Caching, batch discounts and extra thinking tokens are not included.
| Model (Bedrock) | Typical: cost per 1,000 requests | Long-doc: cost per 1,000 requests |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5, Global | $0.45 | $77.50 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5, US profile | $0.50 | $85.25 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5, Global | $4.50 | $155.00 |
How it works for a typical request on Haiku 5.5 Global: 2,000 × $0.10/1M = $0.0002 for input, plus 500 × $0.50/1M = $0.00025 for output. That's $0.00045 per request, or 45 cents per thousand.
We left Amazon Nova and other Bedrock models out of the table because we couldn't confirm their current rates against a primary source today. Our Nova explainer covers where Nova fits.
Free tier warning: Bedrock model calls are generally not covered by the AWS Free Tier credits most people think of. Set a billing alarm first. Our AWS Free Tier 2026 guide explains how.
How fast and how smart is Haiku 5.5?
We have not run Haiku 5.5 ourselves, so these are published numbers only:
- Anthropic calls it "the fastest and most efficient model in the Claude 5.5 family," as quoted in AWS's launch blog.
- OSWorld 2.1 (offline subset): 72.4%, against 15.7% for Haiku 4.5 and 83.9% for Sonnet 5.5, as reported by AI Weekly and ITdaily. These figures were measured at max effort.
- Independent check: Vals.ai ranks it 16th of 45 on its Vals Index (54.31%), also at max effort.
Keep in mind that the high benchmark scores come from max effort, and max effort is the expensive setting. At the default medium effort, expect lower scores.
Claude Haiku vs GPT 5.5: which is better?
People search for this a lot, and we can't give you a clean answer. We could not confirm current GPT-5.5 pricing or a head-to-head benchmark against Haiku 5.5 from a primary source. Here is what has been reported:
- Anthropic's launch materials compared Haiku 5.5 with OpenAI's small GPT-6 Luna, not with GPT-5.5. Android Authority reports that Haiku 5.5 beat GPT-6 Luna on every benchmark Anthropic shared. Those are vendor-chosen benchmarks.
- On AWS, the practical difference is simple. Haiku 5.5 runs inside Bedrock, with your IAM, VPC and billing. An OpenAI model means another vendor and another bill, unless it is offered in your Bedrock region, which you should check in the console.
Editor's take: If you already run on AWS, test Haiku 5.5 first. It runs on infrastructure you already pay for, and at about $0.45 per 1,000 typical requests it is cheap to test.
How to use Claude Haiku 5.5 on Bedrock (boto3)
- Open the Bedrock console, go to Playground, select Anthropic, then Claude Haiku 5.5, and choose an inference profile. Our featured image is AWS's screenshot of this step.
- Give your IAM role
bedrock:InvokeModel. If you stream responses, also give itbedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. - Call the Converse API with the inference profile ID AWS publishes,
global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5:
import boto3
client = boto3.client("bedrock-runtime", region_name="us-east-1")
response = client.converse(
modelId="global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": [{"text": "Summarise this ticket in one line: printer offline again."}]}],
inferenceConfig={"maxTokens": 512},
)
# Haiku 5.5 may return a thinking block first, so pick the text block by type
for block in response["output"]["message"]["content"]:
if "text" in block:
print(block["text"])
break
print(response["usage"]) # inputTokens / outputTokens: check these against the cost table
For data residency, swap in a regional profile such as us., eu., au. or jp.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5. Classmethod confirmed the jp. profile works. Remember that regional profiles cost about 10% more.
Where Haiku 5.5 fits: a sub-agent, not the planner
AWS's blog describes a specific pattern: Opus 5.5 plans and Haiku 5.5 does the volume work. That work includes routing requests, classifying documents, quick Q&A over a knowledge base, small code edits across files, and repetitive computer-use tasks. If you're still working out how AWS services fit together, our what is AWS primer helps.
What developers are saying (and asking)
We looked for real discussion threads on r/aws, r/ClaudeAI, r/LocalLLaMA and Hacker News, but we couldn't verify any Haiku 5.5 threads directly as of 19 October. One French review on eesel.ai quotes unnamed Hacker News commenters. One reportedly preferred Haiku 5.5 to GPT-6 Luna. Another reportedly tested it on a RAG system over Cloudflare documentation and rated it best on quality, speed and price. We could not trace the original comments, so treat them as anecdotes.
The questions that keep coming up in coverage and reviews:
- Does the 100K price cliff wipe out the savings on long-document work?
- What does medium effort score compared with the max-effort benchmarks?
- Should I use the Global or a regional profile?
The first two are answered above. The third depends on residency: use Global unless you need data kept in a region.
FAQ
When was Claude Haiku 5.5 released?
7 October 2026. It reached Amazon Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS the same day.
How much does Claude Haiku 5.5 cost on Bedrock?
$0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens on the Global profile, for prompts up to 100K tokens. Above 100K, it's $0.50 and $2.50. US, EU, JP and AU profiles cost about 10% more.
Is it really 75% cheaper than Haiku 4.5?
Per token, it is 90% cheaper below 100K tokens. Anthropic's "around 75% less for most tasks" describes real task cost, which includes extra thinking tokens and longer prompts.
What is the Bedrock model ID for Claude Haiku 5.5?
AWS's example uses the inference profile global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5. The base ID is anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5, and regional profiles use us., eu., au. or jp. prefixes.
What is the context window?
1 million tokens, up from 200K on Haiku 4.5.
Is Claude Haiku 5.5 free on the AWS Free Tier?
Don't count on it. Bedrock token charges usually appear on your bill. See our Free Tier guide.
Is Claude Haiku 5.5 better than GPT 5.5?
We couldn't verify a direct comparison. Anthropic compared it with OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna and reported wins on its chosen benchmarks.
What are effort controls?
A setting that trades cost against intelligence for each request. Lower effort is faster and cheaper, and higher effort thinks more. Haiku 5.5 is the first Haiku model to offer it.
