AWS Weekly Roundup: Lambda Web Functions and S3 on Vercel
AWS introduces Lambda Web Functions for standard HTTP apps and brings Amazon S3 to the Vercel Marketplace for easier provisioning.

AWS has introduced new ways to deploy code more efficiently, most notably through AWS Lambda Web Functions, which allow standard HTTP servers to run without custom adapters. Additionally, Amazon S3 is now available through the Vercel Marketplace, simplifying the integration between Vercel's frontend tools and AWS storage.
What's new
The most significant update is the launch of AWS Lambda Web Functions. This new form factor allows developers to take a port-listening server built with frameworks like Express, Hono, Fastify, or Next.js and deploy it directly. By using the aws lambda-web deploy command, a live HTTPS URL can be generated in less than a minute without rewriting code into specific event handlers.
Other key updates from the week include:
- Amazon S3 on Vercel: Developers can now provision S3 general-purpose buckets, S3 Tables, and S3 Vectors directly from the Vercel dashboard or via v0 by Vercel.
- EC2 T8i Availability: The newest burstable generation of Amazon EC2 T8i instances has arrived in the South America (São Paulo) Region.
- Agent Governance: New insights into managing autonomous agents were shared, emphasizing the use of Amazon Bedrock AgentCore policies to enforce limits at the gateway level.
Why it matters
For developers, Lambda Web Functions reduce the friction of moving from local development to production by removing the need for infrastructure setup or framework lock-in. The shift in billing—from wall-clock time to actual CPU time used—also offers a more predictable cost model for workloads like server-side rendering or API backends where much of the time is spent waiting.
The integration of Amazon S3 into the Vercel Marketplace allows for a more unified workflow. Developers can manage their entire stack—including Aurora, DynamoDB, and OpenSearch Serverless—within a single AWS account and one bill, while still utilizing Vercel's deployment interface. Furthermore, the use of OIDC tokens for authentication means no static credentials need to be stored, enhancing security.
Deeper dive
AWS Lambda now supports three distinct form factors within the same Firecracker isolation environment:
- Event Functions: The traditional model for asynchronous tasks.
- Web Functions: Designed for user-facing web layers.
- MicroVMs: Used for running untrusted code in stateful sandboxes.
Technically, each Web Function execution environment can handle up to 128 concurrent requests, allowing bursts of traffic to share warm environments. For global deployments, the --regions flag in the deploy command enables replication and latency-based routing behind a single global URL, with the ability to perform canary rollouts by splitting traffic by weight. Amazon CloudFront can also utilize Web Function endpoints as origins using origin access control.
Regarding security for autonomous agents, the recommended approach involves the "scope, know, bound, and observe" framework. To prevent an agent from bypassing its own restrictions, limits should be enforced externally via Amazon Bedrock AgentCore policies at the gateway.
Availability
AWS Lambda Web Functions are available in five Regions, running Node.js 24 on Arm64 with VPC connectivity. Amazon EC2 T8i instances are now available in the South America (São Paulo) Region.
