Amazon Layoffs October 2026: Who's Affected and the Full 2025–2026 Timeline
Amazon cut under 1,000 roles in October 2026, mainly in Stores, after ~30,000 since late 2025. Sourced timeline, severance, AI claims, job tips.

Amazon began a new, smaller round of corporate layoffs in the week of 6–7 October 2026. Fewer than 1,000 roles were affected, mainly in its Stores (online retail) business. Business Insider reported that the cuts reached customer service, marketplace support and retail engineering, with staff in India and the UK among those affected. Amazon hasn't published a number. A spokesperson described it as "the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles."
This comes on top of roughly 30,000 corporate jobs cut across two big rounds in October 2025 and January 2026. Below is the full timeline, with a source for every row, plus what affected employees reportedly get and what job seekers should do next.
How many people did Amazon lay off in October 2026?
Here's what's known, and how solid each piece is:
| Question | What's reported | How solid? |
|---|---|---|
| When? | Emails went out Tuesday 6 Oct (Business Insider); Blind's newsletter dates the start to 7 Oct | Solid, the dates differ by a day |
| How many? | Fewer than 1,000 | One unnamed source to Business Insider. Amazon gave no figure |
| Which teams? | Mainly Stores: customer service, marketplace support, retail engineering | Amazon said "mainly Stores" |
| Which countries? | Reports mention the US, India and the UK | Partly confirmed |
| AWS or Ads affected? | Not confirmed either way | Unknown |
| Notice period | Affected staff are in a 90-day notification period | Reported by Business Insider |
Blind's TL;DR newsletter also mentioned speculation about another round on 27 October. That's unconfirmed. We won't treat it as news unless Amazon or a major outlet reports it.
Amazon layoffs timeline 2025–2026 (with sources)
| Date | What happened | Size | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 Jun 2025 | Andy Jassy memo: generative AI will mean "fewer people doing some of the jobs" over the next few years | No cuts announced | Fortune |
| 28 Oct 2025 | Corporate cuts announced in a post by Beth Galetti, SVP People Experience and Technology | About 14,000 (about 4% of ~350,000 corporate staff) | AP via PBS |
| 30 Oct 2025 | Jassy on the Q3 2025 earnings call: the cuts were about "culture", not finances or AI, "not right now at least" | — | Storyboard18 |
| 28 Jan 2026 | Second large round confirmed | About 16,000 | Digital Music News, HL/Sharecast |
| Feb 2026 | Washington state notices for Seattle and Bellevue, reported as separate from the broader cuts | 84 | Outlook Business |
| 6–7 Oct 2026 | Smaller round, mainly Stores | Fewer than 1,000 (unconfirmed by Amazon) | Business Insider via PPC Land; Blind |
Running total since October 2025: roughly 30,000 corporate roles (14,000 + 16,000), which Business Insider describes as about a 10% cut to the corporate workforce. Add fewer than 1,000 for October 2026. These figures don't include Amazon's warehouse and logistics workforce, which is counted separately.
Are the Amazon layoffs because of AI?
That depends on who you ask, and when. Amazon's own messages have pointed in slightly different directions:
- June 2025: Jassy wrote that generative AI would reduce Amazon's total corporate workforce over the next few years, as reported by Fortune and others.
- October 2025: Galetti's announcement called this generation of AI the most transformative technology since the internet, according to press coverage of the post.
- Later in October 2025: Jassy told analysts the cuts were mainly about culture and layers of management, not AI, "not right now at least" (as reported by Storyboard18).
Meanwhile, the money is clearly moving toward AI. Amazon raised its 2026 capital spending plan to about $220B, mostly for data centres and chips. Business Insider also reported that Amazon has been contacting former employees, including some it laid off, about openings in AWS and its AI businesses.
Editor's take (Lov Singh): "Is it AI?" is the wrong question. The pattern is clearer: retail and support roles are shrinking, while AWS and AI hiring continues. If you're inside Amazon, mobility toward AWS and AI teams looks like the safer direction. We'll see whether the Q3 earnings call on 29 October adds any detail on headcount.
What do laid-off Amazon employees get?
Here's what's reported, and what isn't:
- Notice period: affected employees are in a 90-day notification period, per Business Insider. In past rounds, Amazon has typically kept people on payroll during this window and let them apply for internal roles.
- Severance: terms for the October 2026 round haven't been publicly reported. Business Insider said employees asked in an internal Slack channel (with nearly 37,000 members) whether leaving early for an outside offer would forfeit severance. No answer was reported.
- WARN notices: US employers file WARN notices with states for larger layoffs at a site. We found the February 2026 Washington filing (84 roles) but no WARN filing tied to the October 2026 round yet. Check your state's WARN database if you're in the US.
- Outside the US: India and UK processes follow local law and timelines, and those haven't been reported in detail.
What are Amazon employees saying?
Business Insider reported that the internal Slack channel filled with questions about severance, access to internal job postings, and whether more notices were coming. Blind's newsletter noted that many predictions of a fresh round had circulated on Blind before the cuts began.
We looked for first-hand Reddit posts about this specific round (r/amazonemployees, r/layoffs) that we could verify and link, and didn't find any substantial enough to quote. Rather than invent voices, these are the questions people are actually asking, based on the reporting above:
- If I take an outside job during the 90 days, do I lose severance?
- Can I still see and apply for internal roles while on notice?
- Are AWS and Ads safe, or are they next?
- Is the rumoured 27 October round real?

Amazon layoffs: advice for job seekers
Layoffs and hiring happen at Amazon at the same time. Here's the practical version:
- Look where the money is going. AWS grew 37% in Q2 2026. AI infrastructure, Bedrock and Nova and data centre roles are where Amazon is spending.
- Learn the loop. Amazon's interview process, built around the Leadership Principles, is very specific. Our Amazon and AWS hiring and interview loop guide walks through it.
- Get hands-on with AWS. You can build real projects cheaply. Just read our AWS Free Tier 2026 guide first so you don't get a surprise bill.
- Ex-Amazonians: Business Insider says Amazon has been reaching out to former staff for AWS and AI roles. Keep your internal contacts warm.
- Understand the scale. If you want a sense of the systems AWS engineers run, our breakdown of how AWS handled 192 million requests a second on Prime Day 2026 is a good start.
